- A very special church music project will feature in the Collegiate Church of St Paul during Advent this year:
On each of the four Sundays in Advent, two cantatas composed especially for that day by the German baroque composerGeorg Philipp Telemann
(1681-1767) will be performed during the 10.00 a.m. mass.
In 1725, he published a collection of 72 cantatas for all Sundays and public holidays of the church year and called it: "Harmonischer Gottes=Dienst, oder geistliche Cantaten zum allgemeinen Gebrauche, welche zu Beförderung sool der Privat=Haus= als [auch der] öffentlichen Kirchen=Andacht (...) gerichtet sind".
A continuation of the "Harmonischer Gottesdienst" followed in 1731, in which Telemann composed a further collection, each with two accompanying instrumental parts.
These Advent cantata services will be performed by well-known vocal soloists in St. Paul - such asMarija-Katarina Jukić (1st Advent),
who was also a vocal teacher at the Singtage St. Paul and is the soprano of our vocal ensemble Horus Vocals, as well asMargareth Tumler (2nd Advent),
who recently performed two Italian arias in the Hemisphärensaal at the "Museum des guten Tons" event, andTanja Klančnik (3rd Advent),
who, as President of the Hugo Wolf Society Slovenj Gradec, is in close contact with us for cultural and musical collaborations, and finallyMario Lesiak (4th Advent),
who is in demand as a tenor and lutenist in Kärnten, Steiermark and throughout Austria.
The harpsichord (copy after Grimaldi, 1697), which has been at home in St Paul's Abbey for over a year now, will be used for all masses and, together with the other musicians and instruments, will envelop the abbey church in a golden sound and a contemplative Advent atmosphere.
